MARIALVA (PORTUGAL)

MARIALVA
 N 40.91432; W 7.23300

Marialva is a municipality (freguesia) in the Portuguese district of Mêda. It has 255 inhabitants (2011). The place is one of the historic villages, the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal.
The place is seven kilometers south of the district capital Mêda and about 60 km north of the district capital Guarda.
In 1998, Marialva became one of the villages in the newly created program for the promotion of historically relevant villages with preserved historical buildings, the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal, which is also intended to counter the migration tendencies in structurally weak rural areas.
Among its numerous architectural monuments are in particular the Roman dam and the Roman excavation sites, and the castle from the 12th century, in addition to several churches, fountains, and earlier public buildings.
In the community, there are facilities for rural tourism, a tennis court, swimming pools, and an adjacent thermal bath.
