Trancoso is a Portuguese city belonging to Guarda district, in Beira Alta province, Centro region (Beiras Region) and Beira Interior Norte sub-region, with about 3 420 inhabitants (2011), located on a plateau where the highest point is 939 m high.
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 361.52 km² and 9 878 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 21 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Penedono, to the northeast by Mêda, to the east by Pinhel, to the south by Celorico da Beira, to the southwest by Fornos de Algodres, to the west by Aguiar da Beira and to the northwest by Sernancelhe.
The municipality of Trancoso is characterized by being one of the largest producers of chestnuts, an agricultural activity that has great weight in the population's economy. The chestnut tree is part of the landscape of Trancoso. Traditionally it is a reference region in the production of chestnut and chestnut wood.
